The fifth car of the Vattenfall Solar Team completed the World Solar Challenge 2009 in 32 hours and 38 minutes. The average speed was 91.88 kilometers per hour. Unlike her four predecessors, Nuna5 did not win a gold medal and had to settle for second place.
With 161.2 kilograms, Nuna5 was a lot lighter than Nuna4, we saved 40 kilograms! In addition, she had 25% less air resistance than her predecessor after production. The tires were another innovation. These had to have a lot better profile than previous years.
Unfortunately, Nuna5 crashed off the road two weeks before the World Solar Challenge, meaning that almost the entire car had to be reassembled within two weeks. As a result, the finish was not perfect and the car performed somewhat less well than how it was designed. Nevertheless, it has been a great achievement that the car has been rebuilt within 2 weeks and still managed to secure a second place at the World Solar Challenge 2009.
